The Salkehatchie River originates near the city of Barnwell in the state of South Carolina in the southeastern United States. Before the confluence with the Little Salkehatchie River flows along the Combahee River and forms, it absorbs water from the Turkey Creek and Whippy Swamp. The catchment area of the Little Salkehatchie includes the Lemon Creek, Buckhead Creek and Willow Swamp. The Combahee River flows into the Saint Helena Sound into the Atlantic.
On the banks settled various Indian tribes, especially the Yamasee. Later, the river and the surrounding swamps of General Sherman during the Civil War on his way to Columbia, South Carolina has been traversed.
