Hampton County, South Carolina
Hampton County is a county located in the state of South Carolina in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Hampton.
Geography
The County is located in the south of South Carolina, bounded on the southwest by Georgia and has an area of 1457 square kilometers, of which 7 square kilometers is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Bamberg County, Colleton County, Beaufort County, Jasper County, Effingham County ( Georgia), Screven County ( Georgia) and Allendale County.
History
Hampton County was formed in 1787. It was named after Wade Hampton III, an American politician, U.S. Senator and Governor of South Carolina.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Hampton County 21 386 people in 7,444 households and 5,315 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 42.89 percent White, 55.67 percent Black or African American, 0.20 percent Native American, 0.17 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.62 percent from other races groups; 0.43 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.56 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 7,444 households, 34.6 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 47.9 percent were married couples living together, 18.8 percent were single mothers, 28.6 percent were non-families, 25.8 percent of all households and 11.2 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.19 persons.
27.6 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 8.5 percent between 18 to 24, 29.7 percent between 25 and 44, 22.1 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.1 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 103.8 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 103.9 males.
The median income for a household was $ 28,771, and the median income for a family was $ 34,559. Males have a median income of $ 29,440, women $ 20,418. The per capita income was $ 13,129. 17.8 percent of families and 21.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
