Bamberg County, South Carolina
Bamberg County is a county located in the state of South Carolina in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Bamberg.
Geography
The County is located south of the geographic center of South Carolina, is in the southwest about 40 km from Georgia and has an area of 1024 square kilometers, of which 6 square kilometers is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Orangeburg County, Dorchester County, Colleton County, Hampton County, Allendale County and Barnwell County.
History
Bamberg County was formed in 1897. It was named after William Seaborn Bamberg, co-founder of the city of Lowery's Turnout. Another version says that it was named after the German immigrants from Bamberg.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Bamberg County 16,658 people in 6,123 households and 4,255 families. The population density was 16 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 36.47 percent White, 62.50 percent Black or African American, 0.16 percent Native American, 0.19 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.14 percent from other races groups; 0.53 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.71 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 6,123 households, 31.1 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 43.6 percent were married couples living together, 21.3 percent were single mothers, 30.5 percent were non-families, 27.8 percent of all households and 11.6 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.10 persons.
25.4 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 12.9 percent between 18 to 24, 24.6 percent between 25 and 44, 23.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 88.7 males to every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84 men.
The median income for a household was $ 24,007, and the median income for a family was $ 29,360. Males have a median income of $ 25,524, women $ 19,191. The per capita income was $ 12,584. 23.9 percent of families and 27.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
