Florence County (South Carolina)
Florence County is a county located in the state of South Carolina in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Florence.
Geography
The County is located in northeastern South Carolina, is about 40 miles from North Carolina away and has an area of 2082 square kilometers, of which 10 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Marlboro County, Dillon County, Marion County, Williamsburg County, Sumter County, Clarendon County, Lee County and Darlington County.
History
Florence County was formed in 1888. It was named after Florence Harllee, a daughter of WW Harllee, a president of the Wilmington and Manchester Railroad.

According to the census in 2000, lived in Florence County 125 761 people in 47 147 households and 33 804 families. The population density was 61 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 58.65 percent White, 39.34 percent Black or African American, 0.22 percent Native American, 0.70 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.39 percent from other races groups; 0.68 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.10 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 47 147 households 33.8 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 49.7 percent were married couples living together, 18.1 percent were single mothers, 28.3 percent were non-families, 24.5 percent of all households and 8.2 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.08 persons.
25.9 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 9.7 percent between 18 to 24, 28.9 percent between 25 and 44, 23.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.8 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 88.7 males to every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.2 males.
The median income for a household was $ 35,144, and the median income for a family was $ 41,274. Males had a median income of $ 32,065, women $ 21,906. The per capita income was $ 17,876. 13.5 percent of families and 16.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
