Horry County, South Carolina
Horry County is a county located in the state of South Carolina in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Conway.
Geography
The County is located in the extreme east of South Carolina is bordered to the northeast by North Carolina, on the southeast by the Atlantic Ocean and has an area of 3250 square kilometers, of which 314 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Robeson County ( North Carolina), Columbus County ( North Carolina), Brunswick County (North Carolina ), Georgetown County, Marion County and Dillon County.
History
Horry County was formed in 1802. It was named after Peter Horry, a soldier in the Revolutionary War.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Horry County 210 757 people in 81,800 households and 54,478 families. The population density was 67 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 81.05 percent White, 15.50 percent Black or African American, 0.40 percent Native American, 0.76 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 1.16 percent from other races groups; 1.07 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.57 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 81,800 households, 26.3 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 51.4 percent were married couples living together, 11.5 percent were single mothers, 33.4 percent were non-families, 25.8 percent of all households and 8.5 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.84 persons.
21.3 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 9.4 percent between 18 to 24, 29.3 percent between 25 and 44, 25.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.4 males to every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.1 males.
The median income for a household was $ 36,470, and the median income for a family was $ 42,676. Males have a median income of $ 27,663, women $ 21,676. The per capita income was $ 19,949. 8.4 percent of families and 12.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
