Sam Dunn

Sam Dunn ( born March 20, 1974 in Stroud, England ) is a Canadian director and producer of documentary films focusing on themes from the Heavy Metal. Together with Scot McFadyen, he runs in Toronto, Canada, the production company Banger Films.

Life

Born in England Dunn grew up in the Canadian Victoria. His interest in the Heavy Metal was awakened at the age of nine years, with 15 he hosted a radio show in which only metal was played. As a teenager, he played bass in various rock and metal bands. 1993 he got Scot McFadyen know. Dunn was at the time the bassist for the funk rock band Fungkus, the McFadyen allowed to perform at a concert during the protests at Clayoquot Sound. Work

Even during the graduation Dunn at first planned to write a book about the history of Heavy Metal. Scot McFadyen convinced him of the idea, instead of producing a documentary about the genre. During the next three years, Dunn and McFadyen were engaged in the construction of a film financing. After a Canadian film distributor and the Canadian government film funding had given advances, began filming in June 2004. Further financial support received Dunn and McFadyen Dunns family. Result of this work was published in 2005 Documentation Metal - A Headbanger's Journey. The second project was a film about the worldwide metal scene and their fans and was released in 2007 under the title Global Metal. During the shooting of the first film Dunn learned the 2004 band manager of Iron Maiden, Rod Smallwood, know. Through its intervention, the filmmakers were given permission to board a flight from Iron Maiden with the band's own aircraft to document the world. The film was released in 2009 under the title Iron Maiden: Flight 666 In 2010 he published with Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage, a further documentary in which he pays tribute to the Canadian rock band Rush tribute.

Even after the release of Metal - A Headbanger's Journey voices of metal fans were loud, who thought the topic Metal can not be sufficiently illuminated in such a short film. This created inspired the end of 2011 in collaboration with the Canadian music channel Much More series Metal Evolution, the next to the History of Metals with individual sub-genres, such as thrash metal or nu metal, busy.

For Metal - A Headbanger's Journey Dunn and McFadyen were awarded the 2007 Gemini Award for "Best Screenplay of a documentary or series ."
