Samir Khalil Samir

Samir Khalil Samir SJ (Arabic سمير خليل سمير ) ( born January 10, 1938 in Cairo ) is an Egyptian Islamic scholar, semitist, Orientalist and Catholic theologian.

Life

Samir joined the Jesuit order in 1955 in Aix -en- Provence and took up the study of philosophy, theology and Islamic studies and a doctorate on a topic to the Eastern Catholic theology and about a topic in the Islamic sciences. He had stations in Birmingham, England and the Netherlands. After that he founded 20 institutes for teaching literacy in Egypt and then taught for 12 years at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome. In 1986 he moved during the civil war in Lebanon and taught at the University of Saint Joseph ( USJ ) the subjects of theology and Islamic studies. At the same time he founded the Research and Documentation Centre CEDRAC in Beirut, which works to the Christian heritage in the Middle East collected. He is also a professor at the Pontifical Oriental Institute, Rome, at the Centre Sèvres de Théologie (part of the Institut Catholique ), Paris, and at the maqasid Institute, Beirut, where he - unique in the world - supérieur trainee imams about Christianity and at the Institute des sciences religieuses ( ISSR ) of USJ informed about Muslim issues. He was a visiting professor at the Universities of Graz, Tokyo, Al -Azhar University and Georgetown University, at the Center for Muslim- Christian Understanding, Washington, DC.

On 22 June 2009 he was beatified by Benedict XVI. appointed consultant to the General Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops.

Work

Samir is the author of 40 books and over 500 articles. He is a consultant of many church leaders and politicians in Europe and the Middle East. He also discussed with the Muslim youth in the suburbs of Paris about their daily lives long before the riots in 2005.

His main areas of work are: the Christian Orient, Islam and integration of Muslims in Europe and the relations between Christians and Muslims. In July 2006 ( during the Lebanon war ) he has designed a peace plan for the Middle East.
