Samuel Moore (congressman)

Samuel Moore ( born February 8, 1774 Deerfield, Cumberland County, New Jersey, † February 18, 1861 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania ) was an American politician. Between 1818 and 1822 he represented the State of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Samuel Moore received a classical education and then studied until 1791 at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. From 1792 to 1794 he was there even a lecturer. After a subsequent medical studies and his medical license, he started in Dublin (Pennsylvania) and later in Greenwich (New Jersey) to practice in this profession. He then worked for several years in the East India trade. In 1808 he settled in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where he operate some grain and oil mills. Later, he also led a sawmill and a wool factory. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic- Republican Party.

Following the resignation of Mr Samuel D. Ingham Moore was at the due election as his successor in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he took up his new mandate on 13 October 1818. After two re- elections he could remain until his resignation on 20 May 1822 Congress. Since 1821 he was chairman of the Indian Committee.

Between 1824 and 1835 Samuel Moore was director of the United States Mint. He moved to Philadelphia and engaged in coal mining and marketing of coal. He was also president of the Hazleton Coal Co., a post he held until his death on February 18, 1861 in Philadelphia.
