George Nicholas Eckert

George Nicholas Eckert ( born July 4, 1802 in Womelsdorf, Pennsylvania, † June 28, 1865 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania ) was an American politician. Between 1847 and 1849 he represented the State of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

After studying medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and his 1824 was admitted as a physician George Eckert began to work in Reading in this profession. In 1824 he was among the founders of the Medical Society in Berks County. He later moved to Pine Grove, where he worked in the coal and iron trade. Politically, he joined the Whig party to.

In the congressional elections of 1846, Eckert was in the 14th electoral district of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Alexander Ramsey on March 4, 1847. Until March 3, 1849, he was able to complete a term in Congress. This was initially still affected by the events of the Mexican-American War.

Between 1851 and 1853, George Eckert led the United States Mint in Philadelphia. After the dissolution of the Whigs mid-1850s, he joined the newly formed Republican Party. He died on June 28, 1865 in Philadelphia, where he was also buried.
