Ramey was trained at Wichita University and private and debuted in 1972 at New York City Opera as Zuniga in Carmen.

He is among other things a stage devil par excellence ( Mephistopheles in La damnation de Faust, Faust and Mefistofele, Nick Shadow in The Rake 's Progress, the four evil spirits in Les Contes d' Hoffmann), as an excellent Figaro (Le Nozze di Figaro ) and as a solid Don Giovanni, Escamillo and as Pimen in Boris Godunov.
