Samuel Rawson Gardiner

Samuel Rawson Gardiner, ( born March 4, 1829 in Ropley in Alresford, Hampshire, † February 23, 1902 in Sevenoaks ) was a British historian, known as an expert in the English Civil War, the pre and post and Oliver Cromwell.

Gardiner attended Winchester College and studied at Oxford University ( Christ Church College ) humanistic subjects. He taught from 1871 to 1885 (from 1875 as Professor of Modern History ) at King's College London. In 1884 he became a Fellow of All Souls College and 1892 of Merton College, but declined the Regiusprofessur in Oxford in 1894.

In 1896 he was the first Ford Lecturer in English History at Oxford.

For his major works he undertook from 1863 to 1900 intensive Archvstudien not only in England but also, among others, in Simancas, Venice, Rome, Brussels and Paris. Beyond his historical works on the 17th century in England, he also wrote widely issued textbooks on English history. Its close to the written sources, detailed major works and documents editions as the constitutional history during the Puritan Revolution are still used today.

He published several volumes of the source Camden Society, and from 1891 was editor of the English Historical Review.

Some years he was a member of the Catholic Apostolic church ( Irvingite Church).
