Samuel Werenfels (architect)

Samuel Werenfels (* August 4, 1720 in Basel, † September 11, 1800 ) was a Swiss architect of the baroque. Werenfels designed, among other things, the plans for the castle Ebenrain in Sissach.

Life

Werenfels was born 1720 in Basel, the son of businessman Peter Werenfels (Kaufmann and leather glove manufacturer ) and the Catharina Socin. Werenfels was the godson of the theologian Samuel Werenfels, who was also his great-uncle. 1743 he joined the brotherhood of journeymen Basler spin Weather guild and 1748 champion. In 1788, he was mill superintendent and foreman from 1794 in Basel.

As an architect, he was a representative of the Basel late Baroque. The built according to his plans urban and rural houses in Basel and the surrounding area are evidence of his stylistic proximity to the contemporary Alsatian architecture. Besides Johann Jacob Fechter (1717-1797) and Ulrich Büchel (1753-1792), he is considered one of the most important architects of the city of Basel in the 18th century.

Werenfels was married to Mary Magdalene Strübin.

Buildings

Basel

  • Werenfels built the Blue and the White House ( on the Rhine jump) 1763-1775 as a residential and commercial building for the silk ribbon manufacturer Lukas and Jakob Sarasin. The facade towards the Rhine was aligned with their distribution in blue and white on the number three. Each of the two houses has three axes, with three windows. The tenth axis of the Blue House, the Archivgässlein, is an unplanned cultivation at the request of the owner. An on Rheinsprung highly visible feature are the leaden masks above the windows on the ground floor.   • Post House (1773, now town house): This townhouse is one of the major Basler 18th century buildings. The town house is now home to the civic community. The building was built as a coaching inn. It was at the same time, used as the headquarters of the Board of the buying team, the influential interest group of the Basel wholesale.
