San Cristóbal Totonicapán

San Cristóbal Totonicapán is a town in the department of Totonicapán in the southwest of the Central American Republic of Guatemala.

History

The city of San Cristóbal Totonicapán was the conquistadors founded around 1578 by the Spanish conquerors. The original name was San Cristóbal Paxulá or Pachuła. The Quiche name is composed of the locative pa, and for jul hole and já for water or flow together, so does the place at the waterfall. The conquerors came upon a large number of indigenous peoples, their meeting today on the anniversary of St. Christopher, on 25 and 26 July, is modeled with mask dances, the Baile de la Conquista and still celebrated annually.

Geography

The city lies at an altitude of 2,330 meters above sea level about 12 km west of the departmental capital Totonicapán. Covering an area of 36 km ² lived according to the census of 2010, 36,675 residents in seven districts and the hamlet of Nueva Candelaria.
