San Esteban Island

The Isla San Esteban, also called Isla Turon, is a Mexican island in the Gulf of California between Isla Tiburón and the Archipelago of San Lorenzo.

San Esteban is part of the municipality of Hermosillo in the state of Sonora and is 39.773 km ². The island was inhabited by a tribe of the Seri. In the language it is called Seri Coftéecöl / koɸtɛ ː k ʷ ɬ /.

In San Esteban, there are some endemic species such as the San Esteban Chuckwalla ( Sauromalus varius), the Giant Prickly Chuckwalla ( Sauromalus hispidus ) and the San Esteban Black Iguana ( Ctenosaura conspicuosa ).

Since 2005, the island belongs with 243 others in the Gulf of California, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
