The San Francisco Art Institute Founded in 1871 ( SFAI ) is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities for contemporary art. The school is located in the Russian Hill district of San Francisco in the U.S. state of California. SFAI is a private, accredited by the WASC -profit organization and member of the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design.

Courses

SFAI offers degree programs with a Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts. Dean of the SFAI is currently curator Okwui Enwezor.

Department of Studio Practice

The Department of Studio Practice consists of the traditional departments of painting, sculpture, film, photography, design technology, printing and new genres.

Department of Interdisciplinary Studies

The Department was founded in 2006 interdisciplinary studies offers BA and MA degrees in history and theory of contemporary art, urban studies, and exhibition and museum design (only MA). It also includes four research and teaching institutions: Public Practice, Media Culture, Art Science, and Word, Text, and Image.

History

The San Francisco Art Association ( SFAA ) was founded in 1871 and called in February 1874, the San Francisco School of Design launched under the chairmanship of the landscape painter Virgil Macey Williams. 1893 the name was changed to California School of Design and the Association teamed up with the University of California and moved into the mansion of Mark Hopkins in Nob Hill, whose function was continued as a museum under the title of Mark Hopkins Institute of Art.

The fire after the earthquake in San Francisco in 1906 destroyed both the villa as well as the Institute. A year later, the Institute was built on the site of the old mansion again and renamed San Francisco Institute of Art.

In 1916, the SFAA merged with the San Francisco Society of Artists and accepted the directorship of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, which was located at the time at the Palace of Fine Arts, a remnant of the World Expo Panama - Pacific International Exposition. The Institute was renamed the California School of Fine Arts ( CSFA ). In 1926 it moved to its current address, 800 Chestnut Street in San Francisco to. 1961, the name of the Institute was changed one last time - in the San Francisco Art Institute.

In 1969 the building of Paffard Keatinge Clay has been extended to 2000 square meters, which can accommodate a large auditorium, amphitheater, art galleries and a café.

Photography

Founded in 1946 by Ansel Adams Photographs Division was the first of its kind, devoted himself to photography as a medium of fine arts.

Music

The SFAI organized in 1966 an exhibition of rock and roll posters. End of the 1970's and early 1980's was of the SFAI one of the centers of San Francisco's punk and new wave music scene.
