San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art ( SFMOMA abbreviated ) is a museum of Modern Art in San Francisco. The museum is closed until spring 2016 due to renovation and Erweitungsarbeiten; find in the meantime exhibitions outside the museum in the Bay Area instead.

History

When the museum in 1935 under the founding director Grace L. McCann Morley ( 1900-1985 ) opened, it was the only museum on the West Coast of the USA, devoted exclusively to 20th century art.

In January 1995, the SFMOMA a new building opened in the district south of Market Street ( South of Market / SOMA ). It was designed by the Swiss architect Mario Botta. The 2016 ongoing expansion of the museum is designed by architecture firm Snøhetta.

SFMOMA is a private, non- commercial entity and is directed by Neal Benezra since 2002.

The museum's collection includes important works of photography, painting, sculpture, architecture and design and media art, etc by: Ansel Adams, Anna Atkins, Alice Baber, Matthew Barney, Louise Bourgeois, Constantin Brancusi Julia Margaret Cameron, Marcel Duchamp, Frieda Kahlo, Paul Klee, Georgia O'Keeffe, Helen Levitt, Dorothea Lange, Agnes Martin, Tina Modotti, Jackson Pollock, Man Ray, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Sandy Skoglund, Joel Sternfeld.

The museum is located at the Yerba Buena Gardens in close proximity to the Convention Center Moscone Center and is part of the San Francisco 49 - Mile Scenic Drive.
