Sanam (Niger)

Region

Sanam is a rural municipality in the department of Abala in Niger.

Geography

Sanam is located in the Sahel. The neighboring municipalities are Abala the north and west, the east and Tébaram Kourfeye Centre in the south. The municipality is divided into 26 administrative villages, 14 traditional villages, 62 hamlets, two camps and three water points. The main town of the rural community is the administrative village Sanam.

History

The rural community Sanam arose as an administrative unit at a nationwide administrative reform in 2002. Sanam case were extracted from the Canton Kourfey. Since 2011 Sanam no longer belongs to the Department of Filingue, but for the newly established Department Abala.

Population

At the 2001 census Sanam had 42 568 inhabitants. For the year 2010 57.662 inhabitants were calculated. More than 90 % of the population belong to the ethnic group of Hausa. In addition, Tuareg, Fulani and Zarma live in the community.

About 80 % of the population of Sanam were classified in a study of the French NGO ACTED as poor or very poor 2011. More than 81 % of the population had no access to latrines in the vicinity.

Economy and infrastructure

The municipality is located in a zone is operated in the Agropastoralismus. By Sanam National Road 25, which connects the village with the neighboring communities Abala and Tébaram runs.
