Sandemar Castle

Sandemar Castle is situated on the Baltic coast in the Swedish municipality of Haninge in the historical province of Södermanland.

The building

The original main building is built of brick with cladded plates wood, the sea-side in addition a metal cover has to protect against the sea winds. The current manor house dates from around 1690 and has retained its old pattern because he was spared to Södermanland in 1719 during the Russian attack. Inside are richly decorated wallpaper and tapestries and the garden is decorated in French style with properly trimmed hedges and pyramidal firs. Later, an English park was added with greenhouse crops and fruit trees. The architect is unknown, but the building is reminiscent of the style of Nicodemus Tessin the Elder.

History

During the Kalmar Union Good Sandemar belonged to the German Order of Livonia. Later it passed into the possession of the Imperial Council Erik Axelsson Tott, who probably bought in 1467 all lands of the Order in Sweden today. The ownership structure in the 16th century are not known and in the following century the castle belonged alternately to the noble families Oxenstierna, Bonde and Falkenberg. It is believed that the royal council Gabriel Falkenberg, the 1693 Count Falkenberg af Sandemar, the building was built in the 1690s. 1738 bought by the county judge Carl Watts rank the castle, who had to explain it to Familienfideikommiss. With the abolition of this state in 1964 paved the way for a further sale was free, and so the estate went 2006 to a private individual.

Environment

The area around the castle is characterized by great diversity of species. Noteworthy are the rare species of orchid fen orchid and elder - orchid ( Dactylorhiza sambucina ) and fritillary. The varied nature offers good preconditions for an extensive birdlife. Resting migratory birds on the shore meadows and the nearby bay pull in spring and autumn many bird watchers. In 1997, the " nature reserve Sandemar " was formed.
