Sándor Gellér

Sándor Gellér ( born July 12, 1925 in Vesszős; † 13 March 1996 in Budapest) was a Hungarian football player. With the national team of his native country, the goalkeeper took part in the World Cup 1954.

Career

Sándor started his footballing career Gellér the provincial club Püspökladányi SC. After he played from 1945 to 1947 for the club he joined in the latter year to Budapest at MTK Hungaria, now known by the name MTK Budapest FC. In a team, among others, with Nándor Hidegkuti, Mihály Lantos or Péter Sándor Palotás Gellér won during his time with MTK Hungaria, he played from 1947 to 1962 for the club three times the Hungarian Cup and once each Magyar Kupa and the Mitropa Cup. 1951 First four points clear at Honvéd Budapest, two years you were out with three points again in front of the club where at that time the most famous Hungarian footballer, about Puskás or Bozsik played. In the third championship in 1958 they reiterated Honvéd with a point advantage over second place. In the 1955/56 season MTK Budapest was also the first Hungarian club which played in the European Champions Cup. At 6-3 in the Népstadion of Budapest against the Belgian representative RSC Anderlecht Gellér was also in the starting lineup of his club. In the game Péter Palotás scored a hatrick what the first was at the same time ever in the European Cup of Champions. For MTK Budapest then the blow came, however, in the second round, when Stade Reims in France proved to be too strong. Reims failed until the endgame to Real Madrid.

Sándor Gellér also played eight times for the Hungarian national football team and was part of the Hungarian national team, which was started as a big favorite with the Football World Cup 1954 in Switzerland and in the famous final of Wankdorf lost against the German team after Hungary before four years had not lost long. Gellér only the second goalkeeper was at the finals but behind Gyula Grosics and was not used. He was also part of the squad of the national team of his native country at the Summer Olympics in 1952 in Helsinki, where Hungary won the gold medal without Gellér would have been used. He is not official as Olympians.
