Sanquhar

Sanquhar ( Scottish Gaelic: Sean Caer, dt " Old Fort ") is a town in the unitary authority Dumfries and Galloway, and has 2,028 inhabitants (as of 2001).

Sanquhar is in the valley of the River Nith and the A76, which connects the cities of Kilmarnock and Dumfries.

Officially, the city was founded in 1598 by a Royal Charter, but it can already be found from the 8th century traces of settlement. In Sanquhar is also the oldest post office building in the world, which was opened in the 17th century.
