Santa Anita Park

Santa Anita Park is a horse racing and equestrian center in Arcadia, California. The circuit was opened in 1934. It is a major route in the United States, at the end of the 1930s and early 1940s, among other things Seabiscuit started. Major races are about the Santa Anita Derby and the Santa Anita Handicap. The Santa Anita Park was one of the sports venues of the Olympic Summer Games 1984.

History

On 25 December 1934, the track Santa Anita Park was opened after the horse racing was legalized in California last year. In February 1935 was held the first Santa Anita Handicap, which had $ 100,000 to provide the hitherto highest prize money in the United States. The race course was innovative and led start boxes and the photo finish, which developed the standard in horseracing. The famous race horse Seabiscuit won in 1940 in his last start, the Santa Anita Handicap. During the Second World War, an internment camp for Japanese Americans was at Santa Anita Park between 1942 and 1944 set up. 1945 opened the racetrack after the end of the war, 1953, a cross-country course has been added. The equestrian events of the 1984 Summer Olympics were held at Santa Anita Park. In 2006 there was a motion to close the racetrack and to build an amusement and entertainment center, but this failed.

2008 and 2009 here was the most valuable raceday in the world, the Breeders' Cup discharged.
