Santa Maria is a city on the southern coast of the island Sal ( Cape Verde), which belongs to the Leeward Islands. In 2005, the city had 17,231 inhabitants. Originally a fishing village, the town was known in recent years primarily due to the booming tourism and is now characterized by many new hotels.
The city is located about 20 km south of the international airport Amilcar Cabral International Airport, which is the largest of the Cape Verde Islands.
