Å ar Mountains

The Šar Planina ( mazedon. and serb.: Шар Планина / Šar Planina, alban. Malet e Sharrit, Mali i Sharrit, Sharr ) is a mountain range which extends between Kosovo and Macedonia and reaches heights of over 2000 meters.

Geography

The 80 -kilometer-long mountain range continues to the southwest in the massif of Korab. The highest mountains of the Šar Planina include:

  • Titov Vrv ( 2747 m)
  • Turcin ( 2702 m)
  • Borislavec ( 2662 m)
  • Rudoka ( 2610m )
  • Crni Vrh ( 2585 m)
  • Piribeg ( 2522 m)
  • Ljuboten ( 2498 m)

On the Kosovo side is the National Park Šara, spreading over an area of 390 km ². On both sides of the border there are several ski resorts. The ski resort of Popova sapka on the Macedonian side of Tetovo on a good asphalt road with numerous switchbacks accessible. The road passes under it several times a leading ski resort of Tetovo gondola.

History

The street was destroyed in the open conflict which had broken out in the 2000-2001 Šar Mountains between striving for autonomy Albanians and the Macedonian army. From February until August 2001 took place heavy fighting between the KLA and Albanian separatist militia government troops. There were attacks on the one hand and bomb attacks on villages on the other side. Were affected in addition to the small town Aračinovo ( alban.: Haraçina ) at Skopje in particular settlements north of Tetovo. The middle station of the railway was rendered unusable by vandalism with the therein parked gondolas.

Tourism

The ascent on foot from Tetovo always along the cable car runs through a sparse mixed forest and lasts 3.5 hours. Popova sapka, located at 1780 meters, consists of about a hotel in the area of the ski lifts, and a district with holiday homes dozen. Due to the decline in attendance after 2001 the once popular ski resort in Macedonia some of the ( large ) hotels had to be abandoned; the houses gradually falling apart. Newly built holiday houses suggest again increasing numbers vacationers 2007. In the summer Popova sapka is the starting point for several hiking trails, poorly marked, but not too difficult to perform, at altitudes throughout over 2000 meters north to the mountain Ljuboten and south to the mountain Korab. The best traveling time is May to late September. About 2000 meters are also most of the more than 30 glacial lakes.

Agriculture

In the Šar Planina rare Šarski Sir produced a cheese that is produced in each half from sheep's milk and cow's milk. It is flavored with indigenous wild herbs. The cows and sheep are traditionally grazed by shepherds in the far reaches of the mountain, where there are also wolves and bears. It protects the herds of the robust sarplaninac dogs. It is about 40 pound shepherd dogs that are considered reliable and vigilant.
