Sara Mustonen

Sara Kristiina Mustonen ( born December 23, 1962 in Rovaniemi, † September 12, 1979 in Hintertux, Austria ) was a Finnish alpine skier. She is holding her first place in slalom in February 1977, the youngest Finnish champion in downhill alpine ski racing.

Biography

Sara Mustonen won between 1975 and 1979 a total of 25 Finnish Championships medals, of which 10 in the women's category. On her first race Mustonen already took part as a five year old and has always been the best in their age group in Finland. In 1973, she finished fourth in the slalom at the Trofeo Topolino. In March 1976, she won all three competitions at the Nordic Junior Championships in Alpine Skiing ( Kalle Anka Trofen ) Duved, Åre. A week later she was pleased with her ​​first championship medals in the women's category.

The Slalom Championship won Mustonen 1977 and 1978, the championship in the giant slalom in 1978 and 1979, and in the downhill in 1979. She represented the sports club Ounasvaaran Hiihtoseura and belonged to the Finnish Alpine Ski Team since 1976. In the 1978 World Cup in Garmisch -Partenkirchen Mustonen was the only woman that represented Finland. On the descent, she reached the 40th and the 44th in the giant slalom. In slalom, it is excreted in the second round. In the open Swedish Championship 1978 in Dundret, Gällivare, she went in the giant slalom at the third place, also, she finished fourth in the slalom.

In choosing the best athlete of the year Mustonen was chosen by the Finnish sports journalists at the best skier of the year 1977 and 1978.

Sara Mustonen died in a skiing accident at the Hintertux glacier in Austria died. As the Finnish alpine ski team was training on an unsecured runway, the 16 -year-old Mustonen fell into a crevasse and was killed.
