History

A connection between the right and left bank of the Volga and the respective settlements had been around since the settlement of the region is of great importance. The technical constraints as well as several kilometers enormous width of the Volga in the region necessitated the building of such a large bridge for a long time impossible.

Since about 1900, the Ryazan -Ural railway company tried ( Рязанско - Уральская железная дорога ) State resources and means the city of Saratov for the construction of a railway bridge for connecting its both sides of the Volga routes operated. However, it came to a dispute over the most favorable position of the bridge, close to town or at the narrowest point of the Volga River about 14 km downstream south of the village Uwek (now part of the urban area ). In the meantime, other variants have been considered, so that the project was delayed again and again.

On March 25, 1917, the Provisional Government finally confirmed the project of a two-storey ( railroad and road ) bridge near the city center. But already in July 1917 was a Commission that the construction of two bridges - a road bridge near the town and a railway bridge downstream - was more cost -effective. October Revolution and Russian Civil War made the first implementation again impossible before, after discussion of other variants - including several variants have been proposed tunnel - 1926 finally started the preparatory work for the construction of a downstream railway bridge. The actual construction began in 1930, and on May 17, 1935, approximately 1,850 m long bridge was opened to traffic.

This also provided the operated by the Ryazan -Ural Railway Company since 1896 a train ferry their traffic.
