Sardis is a town in the north of the U.S. state of Mississippi and one of two administrative seats ( in addition to Batesville ) of Panola County. The city lies about 14 km west of Sardis Lake and about 50 kilometers south of Memphis.

Demography

According to the census of 2000, there were 2,038 people in Sardis. Of these, 62 people were living in collective centers, the other inhabitants lived in 790 households and 493 families. The population density was 397 people per square kilometer. It 862 residential units were recorded. The racial the population was composed of 41.9 percent white, 56.4 percent African American, 0.1 percent Native American, 0.4 percent Asian and 0.5 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.7 percent said the lineage of several ethnicities. 1.5 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 790 households out of which 25.1 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 36.1 percent were married couples living together, 23.2 percent were single mothers and 37.5 percent were non-families. 33.4 percent of all households and 19.6 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size 3.24 persons.

The population was spread out with 26.1 percent under the age of 18, 9.2 percent from 18 to 24, 21.2 percent 25-44 years, 22.3 percent from 45 to 64 years and 21.2 percent of 65 years or older. The average age (median) was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 77.5 males per 100 adult women aged 18 and over, there were 72.1 males.

The median income for a household (median) was $ 23 042, and the median income for a family $ 32,933. Males have a median income of $ 24,783, women $ 18,750. The per capita income was $ 15,195. Under the poverty line lived 18.4 percent of families and 24.2 percent of the population, including 32.2 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 24.1 percent of residents aged 65 years or older.
