Šarūnas Bartas

Šarūnas Bartas, sometimes anglicised Sharunas Bartas, ( born August 16, 1964 in Siauliai, Lithuania) is a Lithuanian film director.

Life and work

After finishing his studies at the Soviet film school in Moscow WGIK Bartas founded in the late 1980s on the edge of the Lithuanian capital Vilnius his own film studio KINEMA. Equipped with the necessary technology, he can make films relatively independent. His works largely forgo the narration, they are usually dark, show people in remote locations and in extreme situations. In Corridor (1994 ) about the life observed in the long hallway of a rundown house, Few of Us (1996 ) shows a young woman who finds himself in a remote place in the middle of the steppe, and Freedom ( 2000) land three people an inhospitable Mediterranean beach.

1998 Bartas sat on the jury of the International Film Festival of Venice.

He was married to actress Yekaterina Golubeva Russia (1966-2011), which he discovered and who stars in some of his films.

Reception

Although Bartas ' cinema is usually described as inaccessible, find his films at festivals and on regular French cinema regularly operating a small audience. Actors and directors such as Valeria Bruni Tedeschi and Leos Carax have worked with him. The Franco- Portuguese producer Paolo Branco has produced the last four films of the director.
