Paulo Branco

Paulo Branco ( born June 3, 1950 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese film producer and actor of independent film. Paulo Branco won at the 2002 International Film Festival of Locarno, the Raimondo Rezzonico Award.

Life

Branco studied chemical engineering at the Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon, but the study dropped out two months before the conclusion of 1971 and emigrated secretly to London to escape the dictatorship and military service in the colonies. Two years later he went to Paris and began in 1974 to work for the cinema under the influence of Frédéric Mitterrand. In 1979 he began the production of films.

He produced over 200 films, including Raúl Ruiz, Manoel de Oliveira, Alain Tanner, Michel Piccoli, Danièle Dubroux, Chantal Akerman, Olivier Assayas, Wim Wenders and Werner Schroeter. He founded and directed the production company Gemini Films and Alma film in France and Madragoa film, Atalanta film, Medea and Clap film in Portugal.

In 1999 he was at the Law of the Berlin Film Festival and 2005 of the Venice Film Festival.

Paulo Branco has been awarded by the European Parliament as the best movie producer in Europe in 1999, received at the 2002 Locarno Film Festival the award for best independent producer, and the 2005 Golden Horse Film Festival in Taipei. In the same year Jacques Chirac presented him with the Order of the Officier des Arts et des Lettres of the French Republic.
