Voyage to the Beginning of the World

Trip to the top of the world (Portuguese original title " Viagem ao Principio do Mundo " ) is a film from 1997, by the Portuguese director Manoel de Oliveira. It was the last film of the late 1996 actor Marcello Mastroianni.

Action

An aging director returns to Portugal to look to the north of the country traces its origin. Accompanied by a Portuguese -born and two other actors, they ride in the car, the stations from his childhood, and have time and again the opportunity to talk, about impermanence, wisdom or fate.

Reception

The simply emphasizes held, poetic film about an aging director from the north of Portugal carries strong autobiographical Oliveira, who is involved as a driver in a supporting role himself. The film impresses with its harmonious Photography and the quiet narrative, but also by the compelling performances of the actors. Here again, Mastroianni is emphasized: in the consciousness of his advanced illness, he took the role as his last, and played it easy and soulful.

The film won several awards, including the Globo de Ouro and two FIPRESCI awards, including the Cannes Film Festival.
