Saumont

Saumont is a commune with 245 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Lot- et- Garonne in the Aquitaine region. It belongs to the community association Communauté de communes des Coteaux de l' Albret. The inhabitants are (it) called Saumonais.

Geography

Saumont is located on the department D15 road, 15 km southwest of Agen and 8.1 east of Nerac in the valley of Auvignon, an orographic left tributary of the Garonne. The area around Saumont is called the Pays d' Albret.

History

In the 14th century the fief Saumont belonged to a branch of the Albret family. At several houses there are traces of wall from the 16th century. On the cadastre of 1818, there were two districts of Saumont, one was at the castle and was destroyed in the second half of the 19th century and rebuilt.

Attractions

  • The Château de Saumont was built around 1654 on the ruins of an older building for Marie -Claire de Mauléon and her husband François de Tersac, seigneur de Montberault. In 1807 it was sold. In the 1830s ten Métairies (about Meier yards ), two water mills and a windmill were attached to the castle. In 1888, the castle was renovated. 1956 acquired the humanitarian association petits frères des Pauvres ( little brothers of the poor ) the lock and turned it into a retirement home.

Economy

The main economic activities in Saumont are farming, viticulture, melons and tomatoes. The municipality is located in the wine region of Côtes -du- Brulhois ( AOVDQS ). AOVDQS means Appellation d'origine vin de qualité supérieure délimité, " higher quality wines from a limited growing area ."
