The Savinja in Celje

The Savinja ( German Sann ) is a river in the Slovene Styria and a left tributary of the Sava. It rises in the Steiner Alps in Kar of Okrešelj on the border of Carinthia ( Austria ) and flows through the Logar Valley and the upper and lower Sanntal to Celje ( Cilli German ), then turns to the south and ends at Zidani Most ( Steinbrück, German ) into the main stream of the Sava. The headwaters of the river is the highly romantic limestone mountains of the Steiner Alps, which is named after the river also Sann Thaler Alps. The uppermost part of the river basin is located in the conservation area of Logar Valley (Slovenian Logar valley ) with many natural beauties, such as waterfalls Rinka (90 m) and Palenk (78 m).

1311 the Sanntal of Henry of Carinthia was ceded to a compromise with the Habsburgs to the Duchy of Styria.
