The Savonia University of Applied Sciences (Finnish Savonia - ammattikorkeakoulu, English Savonia University of Applied Sciences) is a university located in the eastern Finnish city of Kuopio. Other sites are located in the cities Iisalmi and Varkaus.

History

The Savonia was established after the reform of the Finnish higher education system and the establishment of a nationwide network of colleges ( ammattikorkeakoulu ) in 1992. In the new university several senior vocational schools went to Kuopio and surrounding areas on, in particular the design school, the Polytechnic and health school in the city of Kuopio, the Walter Ahlström Polytechnic Varkaus and the business schools of Kuopio and Varkaus. First, the institution was named Pohjois- Savon ammattikorkeakoulu ( " Northern Savonia University of Applied Sciences " ), the present name adopted in 2004.

With approximately 6,700 students, of which about 1,000 each in the locations Varkaus and Iisalmi, the Savonia is today the sixth- largest university in Finland. The best-attended course on the engineering sciences, followed by economics. In addition, professional qualification certificates can be obtained in IT curricula, agronomy, design and healthcare.
