Schaff-Herzog Encyclopedia of Religious Knowledge

The Encyclopaedia of Protestant Theology and Church (RE ) was a lexical project in Protestant theology, which was released in three editions, 1854-1913. The RE is the predecessor of Theological Encyclopaedia ( TRE).

Edition history

It was founded by Johann Jakob Herzog (1805-1882), after the initially planned as the publisher Matthias Worm Burger (1804-1848) had died. Duke began work in Halle ( Saale), where he held an associate professor of Church History and New Testament exegesis, and she continued in the second band in Erlangen, where he was appointed in 1854 to the Chair of Reformed Theology. He stressed the denominational character of the irenic Encyclopedia and historical research in terms of methodology.

Duke won the first Lutheran and associate professor of Church History Gustav Leopold Plitt (1836-1880) as co-editor for the second, revised edition of the RE. After his early death then took over Albert Hauck (1845-1918), professor of church history and Christian archeology in Erlangen, the processing of the second edition and this led after the death of the Duke in 1882 as a publisher to an end. Later, in the years 1896-1913 he took from Leipzig, where he now taught as a professor of church history, the editorship of the third edition. Therefore, one can refer to the RE as a whole as a joint effort Erlanger Reformed and Lutherans.

Translation and Aftermath

An English translation was published in the U.S. under the name Schaff- Herzog Encyclopedia of Religious Knowledge by Philip Schaff and was widely used. It is a translation of the second German edition.

The third edition offered further innovations, so that generally the Encyclopaedia of Protestant theology and the church is seen as foundational work for the Theological Encyclopaedia. Also, this standard work is important for the Biographic- bibliographic church encyclopedia and all other derivatives.

Criticism

" The leading Protestant lexicon of the 19th century. Especially in its third edition to this day a work of unsurpassed thoroughness and care and about church history still elemental value. A look at ... many items of RE teaches modesty: in some areas, we do not know more than a century ago; in some areas the historical awareness of the problem and the sovereign knowledge of the sources at the time was rather higher than today.
