Schengen is a municipality in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, in the canton of Remich.

The village of Schengen is a small wine village on the Moselle. It was the capital of the existing of the places Remerschen, Schengen and Wintringen church that was originally called Remer 's and was renamed September 3, 2006 in accordance with the internationally known, signed in 1985 by the Schengen agreement here.

The community is located directly on the of Germany (Saarland ), France and Luxembourg formed the triangle opposite the German Perl community, which is located on the other side of the Moselle and the French Apach.

The Town Hall is located in Remer 's.

The community is member of the following local organizations: Am Haff, SESE, SIAER, SICEC, SIGI, and SIGRE SYVICOL.

Partner community is Ischgl in Austria.

Schengen Agreement

Schengen has become a synonym for an area without border controls, as at 14 June 1985, five EU Member States in the vicinity of this place, signed the Schengen Agreement on the Mosel ship MS Marie -Astrid, that of the abolition of checks at their common borders and the introduction free movement of persons and goods provides. On the banks of a local European monument commemorates the signing of the contract. The Schengen Agreement and other Agreements on the implementation of the project form the so -called " Schengen acquis ". The Schengen Agreement came into force on 26 March 1995 and is regarded as the introduction of the common currency euro on 1 January 1999 as a milestone in the European process.

Before the European Information Centre Centre Européen in Schengen a piece of the Berlin Wall was erected on February 8, 2010. Subsequently, the European museum was on 13 June 2010 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Schengen Agreement, inaugurated. At 200 square meters, visitors can learn all about the history and significance of the Schengen Agreement. Historical photographs, film and sound recordings as well as statements of the parties at the time their motivation to document the signing of the Convention of 1985, which will also be issued.

The museum's centerpiece is an interactive map animation. We learn here concise information on the history of the boundaries of the various Schengen states, as well as other EU countries that are not yet acceded to the Schengen area. Target of the animation is to explain to the visitors, as the boundaries and related political and economic power relations have shifted since 1815 within the continent of Europe. Also, the difference between the Schengen Area and the EU is illustrated.

Attractions

In addition to the monument to the Schengen Agreement Schengen offers other attractions. Symbol of the village are the church and a castle and the remains of a moated castle from the 13th century. The reconstructed Baroque garden of the castle belongs to the ensemble of the Gardens without Limits. The castle, last holiday and children's home of the monastic Order of St. Catherine's Women Sisters, was leased by them and converted into a hotel, which opened in spring 2010.

From Schengen from the " Luxembourg Wine Route " along the Mosel leads in a northeasterly direction to the mouth of the sour water at low cost. On the German side of this wine -growing region " Southern Wine Mosel " is called, which forms a part of the wine-growing region Mosel- Saar- Ruwer.

According to the judgment of historians a product manufactured by Goethe watercolor shows an erected in Sierck liberty tree against the background of the Schengen Strombergs.
