Schildau is a former town and since January 1, 2013 the district of the city Belgern - Schildau in the district of North Saxony Free State of Saxony. The place is known as Gneisenaustadt and as a likely origin of Gotham.

Geography and transport

Schildau is located south-southwest of Torgau on the northern edge of the Dahlen Heath and is almost completely surrounded by forest. The neighboring towns are county town of Torgau (13 km), Wurzen (19 km) and Dahlen ( 13 km). The Federal Highway 87 runs north of the town. Large areas in the area are part of the nature reserve Dahlen Heath.

History

Schildau was first documented in 1170. Drawn from some Stone Age finds that this area was inhabited already in prehistoric times. On old maps (eg by Johann George Schreiber 1750 ) and views (eg by R. Stieler, 1870 ) and the variant Schilda be found.

Schildau 1574-1578 was affected by witch hunts. Two women got into witch trials.

From 1952 to 2012, the city was the official nickname Gneisenaustadt. To Schildau belonged since 1 January 1994, the places Sitzenroda and Probsthain and since 1 January 1999, the places Kobershain and Taura.

Schildau initially aimed at a merger with Torgau, after other merger opportunities with the communities Dahlen, Mockrehna and Belgern were rejected by the city council or mayor.
