Schlachtensee Student Village

The students Schlachtensee is located in the southwest of Berlin, in the district Nikolasee the district of Steglitz- Zehlendorf. It was built 1959-1964 as part of the Free University of Berlin. The project was funded by a donation from the Government of the United States.

Architecture and History

The Berlin architects Hermann Fehling, Daniel Gogel and Peter Pfankuch arranged the student sleeps around a campus into a composition that is unique in Berlin. The 27 houses are grouped around a central square, the " village ". You are terraced located in a green area, all designed Hermann Mattern. The facility is very invested in community. In June 2010, the cooperative sold it to a Swiss pension fund and leased it back for a period of 99 years from this. However, the purchase agreement must still be approved by the House of Representatives.

The students Schlachtensee is one of the venues of the novel The beautiful phoenix bird by Jochen Schimmang, which deals among other things with the time of the student movement. One of the chapters of the novel is titled The caves of Schlachtensee.
