Catchment area and the course of the Schoharie Creek

The Schoharie Creek is a right tributary of the Mohawk River in upstate New York.

River

The Schoharie Creek rises at Indianhead Mountain in the Catskill Mountains. It flows predominantly in a northerly direction. At the upper reaches is the Schoharie Reservoir. 5 km down river is the lower basin of the Blenheim - Gilboa pumped storage power plant. It is operated by the New York Power Authority and has 4 units with a total capacity of 1000 MW. It flows in a northerly direction at Blenheim, Middleburgh and Esperance over and finally ends at Port Hunter in the Mohawk River. The Schoharie Creek has a length of 150 km.

History

Two well-known bridges over the Schoharie Creek collapsed together in the past. In 1987, broke two supporting lengths of the New York State Thruway. On 28 August 2011, the covered bridge Old Blenheim Bridge was destroyed by the flooding as a result of Hurricane Irene.

The Erie Canal crossed before the Schoharie Creek by means of an aqueduct. Today there is the Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site.
