History

After the Second World War, Friedrich Schunk founded (1912-1998), the company in 1945 in a garage in Lauffen. One of the first larger orders, the mechanical workshop included the production of brake drums and flywheels for the NSU Prinz 4 and precision parts for the Porsche 356

In 1964, Heinz -Dieter Schunk, son of Friedrich Schunk, join the company. Under his leadership, Schunk developed by artisanal operation to an internationally represented company.

History clamping technology

Since 1966, manufactures and distributes Schunk standardized clamping jaws for lathe chucks. In 1978, the hydraulic expansion technology, a method for high-precision clamping of shank tools, added as a second product range. With tandem, a system for universal and precise workpiece clamping, launched Schunk 1988 the product range Stationary Clamping Systems. In 1994, Schunk GmbH Hage in quantities and thus completed his clamping technology portfolio to include lathe chucks for lathes.

With the acquisition of the Italian company MAG system Schunk expanded the product range Stationary Workholding solutions to the magnetic clamping technology. About a stake in the Italian magnetic technology specialists SPD in 2008 built Schunk these skills further.

2010, the location quantities of Chucks work was expanded into a competence center for workpiece clamping.

History gripping systems

As established in the early 1980s industrial robots, the company launched in 1982 the first standardized robot grippers on the market and thus laid the foundation for today's automation division.

In subsequent years expanded its Schunk gripper technology portfolio to the rotational, linear, and moving to quick-change systems for automation components.

By integrating the amtec advanced robotics GmbH in the group of companies Schunk 2003 Business Automation mechatronic drive components and thus laid the foundations for modular robotics. In particular, by aligning the annual Expert Days on Service Robotics, the company Schunk earned the reputation of being one of the driving forces of the applied service robotics.

2006 GEMOTEC assembly GmbH from Huglfing was integrated into the company and built up the product range Modular Assembly Technology.

General History

Due to the increased demand from abroad Schunk founded in 1989 first foreign branches - called Intecs - in Belgium and Switzerland. In 1992 he was Intec USA in Raleigh, the capital of North Carolina, which was also extended to the production site. In 2006, SCHUNK in Hangzhou, China on production. After the German quality standards could not be reached there, Schunk completed this work in 2009. The Shanghai branch was then developed as a distribution site.

In early 2010, the company established the laser Schunk GmbH in Lauffen and brought for the first time a laser processing machine on the market.

For his lifetime achievements Heinz -Dieter Schunk was honored in 2008 with the German engineering price. In 2010 he also received the Engelberg Robotics Award. In 2012 he was made an honorary citizen of his hometown Lauffen.

In 2010, Schunk counts 23 subsidiaries and more than 1,800 employees worldwide. The company is managed by Heinz -Dieter Schunk, his son Henrik A. Schunk and his daughter Kristina I. Schunk.
