History

Schuyler was born in 1866 as the train depot of the Union Pacific Railroad under the name Shell Creek Station. 1869, the Platte County was divided into three smaller administrative units and how originated Colfax County. A year later, Shell Creek Station was then renamed in Schuyler, officially registered as a town and made ​​the county seat. It was named after the U.S. Vice President Schuyler Colfax. Growth, the city enjoyed mainly by Texas cowboys who drove their cattle to Schuyler. The city at that time had about 600 inhabitants. However, a drought and a plague of locusts in the following years limited the population growth a short time. But the city in 1900 had 2,157 inhabitants. The figures moved steadily further to 2,500 in 1930, 3,000 (1960) and 4,151 (1980 ) to finally 5,371 in 2000.
