The Schwelme is an approximately nine kilometers long river, which rises in the southern area of ​​the city Schwelm in western Westphalia and ends at Wuppertal- Barmen as a right tributary to the river Wupper. The water quality is II -IV. Thus the Schwelme one of the most polluted body of water is in the range of Wupper Association.

The name Schwelme refers to the former property of the river, frequently overflow their banks and flood the surrounding area. In the Middle Ages the name Bach went over to a nearby Fronhof and later gave the Schwelm her name.

In 1900 the waters of the Schwelme filled the gondola ponds of snuff mill, the largest excursion premises in the region of today's valley road in Schwelm. Since the mid 19th century to the 1970s, the water was used by the Schwelme immediately north of the source located Schwelmer pool.

Topography

The spring pool is located in the southern city of Schwelm in the forest at an altitude of 315 meters above sea level.
