The Schynige Platte Bahn (SPB ) is a cog railway ( Riggenbach system -Pauli & Von Roll (Valley) ) in the Bernese Oberland in Switzerland with a track width of 800 mm. Takes you on a 7 km stretch from Wilderswil near Interlaken to the Schynige plate, a mountain that offers a beautiful view of Interlaken, Brienz, Lake Thun, as well as the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.

History

The concession for the railway was granted in 1890, the line was opened in 1914 and electrified on 14 June 1893. The corporation Schynige Platte Railway Company sold the track in 1895 to the Bernese Oberland Railway (BOB ), the decisions of principle to have been the end of 1894 like ( Resolutions of the Extraordinary General Meetings of SPB on 5 December 1894 and the BOB 22 December 1894). In 1914 the line was electrified, which was then acquired the locomotives are still in plan operation. 1946 laid the BOB and the overall working of the Jungfrau Railway (JB) / Wengernalpbahn ( WAB) their directorates together, the tracks in the Jungfrau region have since been managed and operated jointly. The administrative community received in 2000 as Jungfraubahnen Management AG its own legal personality, as a joint subsidiary of the Jungfrau Railway Holding and BOB.

In the summer of 2005 tests were carried out with a railcar and control cars Wengernalpbahn. In the off- season could with this and other identical compositions operation costs are to be settled. However, it has been found that the tunnel profiles should have been adjusted. Also the constant steep trail was a big burden on the railcars. During the floods in late August 2005, the railcar was severely damaged and transferred in a row in the spring of 2006 to Kaiseraugst, where he was stopped along with the appropriate control car.

The average slope of the train is 19% and its greatest slope 25%. The minimum curve radius is 60 meters.

Structures

The Grätlitunnel was renovated in 1982.

Operation

Since the track is not safe for winter and on the Schynigen plate no winter sport is played, the track is only open in the summer. The avalanche-prone upper part of the track driving line must be removed each year in the fall and re-installed after throwing snow in the spring.
