Hyacinth Squill (Scilla hyacinthoides )

The Hyacinth Squill (Scilla hyacinthoides, Syn: Nectaroscilla hyacinthoides (L.) Parl ) is a plant of the genus Blue star (Scilla ) in the family of asparagus plants ( Asparagaceae ).

Features

The Hyacinth Blue Star is a perennial, herbaceous plant that reaches the plant height of 30 to 80 centimeters. This Geophyt forms onions as outlasting. The four to twelve standing together in a basal rosette leaves are simple, 30 to 60 centimeters long and 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters wide, narrow lanceolate, ciliate rinnig and short at the edge.

40 to 180 flowers form a dense, racemose inflorescence. The lower bracts are 1 millimeter long. The radial symmetry, hermaphrodite flowers are triple. The six equal multiform bracts are 6-7 mm long and 2 mm wide, pale blue purple and campanulate spread to star-shaped.

The flowering period extends from April to May

Occurrence

The natural range is the eastern Mediterranean. Here Hyacinth Blue star on Crete, in the west and south-west Turkey, Cyprus, Syria, Lebanon and Palestine on dry Kalkfelsrasen occurs. In the western and central Mediterranean region, the species has been naturalized.

Use

This type is rarely used as an ornamental plant in rebates. This species is in cultivation since 1576.
