Scipione Gonzaga

Scipione Gonzaga ( born November 11, 1542 in Mantua, † January 11, 1593 in San Martino), was the son of Count Carlo Gonzaga of Gazzuolo, brother of Annibale Francesco Gonzaga and cardinal.

His mother was Emilia Cauzzi Gonzaga († April 3, 1573 ), the daughter of Francesco Gonzaga.

Scipione grew up under the care of Ercole Gonzaga. In Bologna, and later in Padua, he studied mathematics and philosophy. After completing his theological studies, he came to Rome and was ordained a priest.

Pope Gregory XIII. got him in the consistory of December 18, 1587 cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria del Popolo.
