Scuola Grande dei Carmini

The Scuola Grande dei Carmini was one of the six major brotherhoods in the Republic of Venice. Your building is located in the Dorsoduro district, between Campo dei Carmini and Campo Santa Margherita in the church of Santa Maria del Carmelo.

History

The foundation of the school is dated to the year 1594. Recognition as a " Great School " but only took place in 1767 by the Council of Ten. 1807, the school was abolished under the Napoleonic regime, but opened again in 1853. The Brotherhood is still active today.

Building

The building consists of two phases. A first L-shaped and fully -functioning section including part of the main façade was built from 1627 by Francesco Caustello. After the acquisition of the Eckgrundstückes between the foothills of the square and the church of the Carmini a new architectural competition was announced in 1668, the Baldassare Longhena decided for themselves. The two-storey façade extends adjacent to the monastery church. The equipment, including the ceiling fresco by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696-1770), built in the 18th century. The flat-roofed hall on the ground floor holds monochrome murals created Niccolò Bambini ( 1651-1736 ). The narrow staircase is decorated with stucco work by Abbondio Stazio (1663-1745) and paintings by Sante Piatti ( 1687-1747 ). Also the contrast ceiling paintings in the great hall on the upper floor (transfer of the Scapular of the Blessed Simon Stock ) is by Tiepolo. These is still a painting by Giovanni Battista Piazzetta, representing Judith and Holofernes.
