Scutelleridae

Turtles bug ( Eurygaster testudinaria ), Larva

Shield bugs ( Scutelleridae ) are a family of bugs (Heteroptera ). They are found worldwide with about 500 species.

Features

The bugs reach a body length of 6-22 mm and have a roundish body. Your abdomen and large parts of the wings are a very large tag ( scutellum ), which was eponymous for the family covered. Many species are colored very vividly. Their antennae are five-membered. The genus Odontoscelis sees the Erdwanzen ( Cydnidae ) very similar because they also have spiny legs, but they differ from them by their hair.

Occurrence

Most species of shield bugs live in the tropical and warm regions of the earth. They are found on different plants whose juices they suck with their proboscis.

Way of life

Some species are pests in agriculture, especially grain and cotton which are affected. Eurygaster integriceps is, for example, in Asia and Europe caused a feared pest of cereal crops, the great damage.

Many species can discard the defense malodorous substances. The females lay their eggs in groups round glued onto stems and leaves.
