Sebastian Klotz

Sebastian (I.) Klotz, even Sebastian Cloz Kloz, Khlotz ( born January 18, 1696 Mittenwald, Upper Bavaria, † January 20, 1775 ) was an important violin maker in Mittenwald from the Klotz family.

Life

Sebastian Klotz was the child of the weaver 's daughter Mary Seiz and Matthias Klotz, founder of violin making in Mittenwald. He learned the violin with his father. Sebastian Klotz ' fiddle style was until after 1800 model of the Mittenwald school of violin making. His model aesthetics, the so-called block model, lies between the Jacob Stainer and the Amati. Typical are medium-high buckle, buckle wide groove, flat edge chamfer and plastic edge work. The characteristic coat is thin and intense color brown. Among his pupils were Anton and Andreas Gäßler and Johann Georg Psenner.

1724 he married Maria Rosina Mayr (around 1704-1770 ) from Rovereto. They had eleven children, including the later violin maker George ( II ) Charles, Giles and Sebastian Joseph (I.) Thomas. Aegidius Klotz is regarded as the ancestor of the German luthier tradition of the 19th century, since he took the model of Jacob Stainer aesthetics. The violin factory still exists today and is in the seven generation.
