Secession Building, Vienna

The exhibition building of the Vienna Secession, colloquially simply called Secession, was 1897/98 built by Joseph Maria Olbrich as an exhibition hall for contemporary art, what it is for today. It is one of the most important buildings of the Austrian Secessionsstils ( Jugendstil).

History

" Walls, it should be white and shiny, holy and chaste. Serious dignity should envelop everything. Reine dignity as they crept over me and shuddered as I stood alone in Segesta before unfinished sanctuary .. just my own feeling I wanted the sound hear, see, benumbed into cold walls of my warm feeling, " Olbrich said and perhaps even already ventured a look into the modern age.

The cost of the building have been largely applied by members of the Artists' Association Secession, Vienna, however, provided the land free of charge, allegedly by personal appearance by Josef Engelhart at mayor Karl Lueger. For the city was the construction of the building in relation to the regulation of the Vienna River and the redesign of the Karlsplatz, but remained piecemeal. For example, an avenue between St. Charles Church and Secession building was planned.

Also formally takes over the building of the Charles Church terms, particularly by its golden dome ( a foliage gilt bronze ), by Eduard Pötzl from " vernacular" Krauthappel ( = cabbage ) called. Due to its large smooth walls and the cubic appearance of the building was also scolded Assyrian urinal.

Below the dome emblazoned in gold letters the motto of Secession: The age its art, to art its freedom ( by Ludwig Hevesi ). To the left of the entrance door there is a second motto: Ver Sacrum ( Sacred Spring ), designed to express the hope of a new art bloom.

The building rests on eight -meter high concrete pillars that reach down to at this point flowing underground river Wien.

Gustav Klimt's Beethoven Frieze, 1902 originally created for a temporary exhibition at the Vienna Secession, is now on permanent loan there again and is on display in the basement.

Creative elements

From Klimt's brother George comes to the design of the bronze entrance doors.

Right next to the building is the bronze statue of Mark Anthony by Arthur Strasser, which was originally created for the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900. The Roman general is presented as lazy and decadent, which is perhaps a commentary on the sense of time of the fin de siècle. The statue is sometimes called a " lion cab " in the vernacular.

The design of the Gorgons over the front door was made by Othmar Schimkowitz.

The Secession building is located on the back of the Austrian 50 cent coin.

In spring 2010, the motto was covered by The Art their art, freedom their time during a two-month art project by Christoph Büchel in the building.
