Sechium form a genus of flowering plants in the family Cucurbitaceae ( Cucurbitaceae ). The plants produce fleshy fruits. All wild species growing in Mexico or Central America. The chayote ( Sechium edule ) is cultivated in many parts of the tropics and sub- tropics.

The genus includes about Sechium eleven species whose classification has seen many changes in recent decades. Studies of the 90s share the genus consistently into two sections Sechium and Frantzia. The two sections differ in the morphology of the floral nectaries and the arrangement of the stamens.
