The Seckach is a small river in northern Baden-Württemberg, which has its origins in the Odenwald and empties into Moeckmuehl in the district of Heilbronn in from the right and north to the Jagst.

The Seckach is about 28 km long and its catchment area covers 262 km ². Attributable to the creek Kirnau, which is at the confluence of approximately 8 kilometers longer than the Seckach, about 100 km ².

Course

The Seckach rises near the hamlet Buchener Waldhausen in source- rich region and takes early side branches on. First it flows south-east and south.

Fauna

The water of the Seckach is very rich in oxygen, clean and relatively cold. This fact favors the trout that is found here are numerous. In the lower reaches there are also eels. Once lived in the Seckach also crayfish.

Flood protection

After heavy rainfall occurred on 21 December 1993, the streams in the catchment area of Seckach and Kirnau on the shore. The Seckach reached at Senn field a discharge rate of 154 m³ / s, exceeding the average discharge of the river Neckar in Mannheim. There was flooding in the entire region, particularly affected were Adelsheim, Moeckmuehl, Roigheim and lying on the Kirnau Osterburken (see also Rhine flood 1993). In the old town Möckmühler the highest water level measured since 1732.

After another flood 1995 founded communities in the catchment area of Seckach Kirnau and in 1997 formed an association flood protection to initiate improvements to the flood control and flood prevention. By 2008, 15 flood retention basins were constructed, intended to protect the area in front of a hundred-year flood. Other protective measures have been taken, especially in Moeckmuehl. There were at the Jagst to the old town side, and built on the Seckach dams and concrete walls, also of the city wall devices for mobile sheet piles were installed at the gates. Also on the opposite left Seckach Jagst shore walls and dikes were built.

Hydropower

In the Middle Ages mills used the water power of the Seckach. The Town Mill of Moeckmuehl 1471 and was occupied at that time probably for quite some time, as well as the adjacent Lohemühle.
