Mouth of the Severn

The Second Severn Crossing (English Second Severn Crossing, Ail Groesfan Welsh Hafren ) is a motorway bridge over the mouth of the Severn between Bristol, England and Cardiff, Wales. It is located about 6 km below the older Severn Bridge.

The bridge has a total 5128 m long and has in every direction over three lanes and a narrow emergency lane. It consists of three parts: the central cable-stayed bridge of 948 m length to include beam bridges of 2077 m in the west and to the east by 2103 length.

The span of the cable-stayed bridge is 456 m. The other pillar spacings are usually about 98 m, so that openings 24 and 25 in the east found openings in the west. The bridge is slightly curved in an S -shape in plan. The height of the road rises towards the center; there is the clear height 37 m. The pylons are H-shaped, and 100 m higher than the bottom edge of the bridge. The bridge crosses the railway line South Wales Main Line, which is performed here in tunnel position under the Severn.

The construction began in 1992 and lasted for about four years. The bridge is almost completely built up on the pylons from prefabricated components that had been produced on a 28.3 acre building site on the English side. They were taken with tracked vehicles and a Light to the installation site and lifted by a floating crane in the air.

The bridge was opened on 5 June 1996 by HRH Prince Charles. It is used daily by about 60,000 vehicles and is today (only in the direction of travel Wales) toll road.
